Name: Per Josephson
Born: 1971, Stockholm, Sweden
Per Josephson, born in 1971, continues a family tradition of artistic expression that includes the celebrated 19th-century artist Ernst Josephson. He studied at Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design, Berghs School of Communication, and the Biskops-Arnö Writers’ School.
Drawing upon generations of heritage and a rich array of cultural influences, Per Josephson carries artistic tradition forward in his own distinctive way. He is a contemporary storyteller and artist who creates, borrows, and reuses imagery to produce powerful new works. “I steal, sample, and allow myself to be inspired by the great masters. This is the foundation of my art,” says Per Josephson when describing his unique style. Per is a maximalist.

Artistic Statement:
Per Josephson works across the fields of visual art, literature, design, and moving image. His artistic practice is characterized by a maximalist approach in which historical references, popular culture, and contemporary narratives merge into layered visual worlds. Through appropriation, reinterpretation, and transformation, he creates works that examine memory, identity, power, and the human condition.
Operating at the intersection of art and storytelling, Josephson moves freely between media and genres. His practice encompasses painting, sculpture, public installations, writing, and animated works, often blurring the boundaries between image and narrative. Rooted in both artistic tradition and contemporary culture, his work invites viewers to rediscover familiar symbols in new contexts.
